展覧会の主旨

現代における美術の価値と、本展覧会の主旨

 美術作品の「価値」を見定めるときに、価格に基づいた価値づけ、つまり商品的価値が分かりやすい訳ですが、ではその商品的価値を決定するのは何かというと、主に歴史的価値、社会・文化的価値によるところが大きいと思われます。

 歴史的に認められてきた作品は安定度が高く、ゆるぎない商品的価値を生み出しています。一方現代の作家によるものは、未来への期待値として、価値づけられることになります。美術館や評論家は当然そういった価値を尊重するので、歴史的・社会的に安定しているもの、美術史に鑑みて将来性の高いものを優先する傾向がある、また別言すると美術館自体が、そういった価値をつくり出してきたともいえます。そこで、多くの現代の作家は、如何に懸命に制作を続けてきたとしても、その努力や矜持にみあう評価を得ることは困難であると言えます。特に最近では、美術館や評論家から、団体展に所属している作家は美術の流れから取り残された存在と見做されているところがあります。20世紀半ばから鮮明化されてきた現代美術は、これまでの美術の歴史を批判的に検討しながら新しい要素を付加していくという原理で展開されていると言え、そういった原理とは無縁に、キャンバス上で具象・抽象イメージを追求している作家は、歴史的にはすでに取り残されているとされているわけです。

 しかし多くの美術系団体の作家や、団体には所属せずとも、現代美術とは別のスタンスで、自らの制作を続けている多くの作家達は、むしろ過去の美術の歴史を正当に継承発展させているといえるのではないか、現代の美術状況において、一見取り残されたかに見える、これらの制作行為の価値を、私たちは改めて問いたいと考えています。

 そこで、それぞれの作家が美術をどのように捉え、これまで制作を続けてきたのかを、ぜひとも感じ取っていただきたいと考え、今回の展示を計画いたしました。一人が1~2点の作品を出品するという通常のグループ展とは異なり、個々の作家の思考、作品の変化過程、制作の全貌が見える形で、過去数点ごとの作品展示を行うことといた

します。

 この展覧会が、美術館・評論家主導の美術体制に疑義を呈する機会となることを期待し、計画を進めているところでございます。牽強付会のきらいもあり、ご異論もあろうかと存じますが、議論の輪を広げていけたらと考えております。本展覧会の実現に向けてよろしくご協力の程お願い申し上げます。

The value of art today and the main point of our exhibition

When we decide whether works of art are valuable or not, it is easy to understand its value if we decide how much they are. This is what we call market value. But, what decides the market value of works of art? It depends on how valuable they are in terms of history, society or culture.

The works which have been historically appreciated are stable and produce a firm market value. On the other hand, works which were produced by modern artists are supposed to be valued in terms of how valuable they will be in the future. Of course, art museums and art critics think highly of such value, and therefore they tend to think works which are historically and socially stable and which are thought to be promising in terms of art history have priority. In other words, art museums themselves, we can say, have determined the value of such works. It follows that a lot of artists have difficulty in gaining as much appreciation as their efforts and honor should allow for, no matter how hard they may make these efforts.

Especially these days, many artists belonging to a group exhibition are thought by museums and art critics to have been isolated from the current trends of art. The modern art which has been clearly distinguished from other kinds of art since the mid-20th century has critically reexamined the history of art and has added new factors to itself. However, apart from such current trends, the artists who are trying representational and abstract paintings on their canvas have already been separated in history.

However, we think that a lot of artists in art groups, as well as artists who continue painting their pictures in a position different from modern art without belonging to any groups, are both handing down and developing old history on art using fair means. We want to reevaluate the value of producing these activities, which seem to be isolated from contemporary art at first glance.

We have planned this art exhibition, hoping you will feel what each artist has thought of art and how hard they worked to keep producing their works. We will exhibit several works from each artist for the purpose of showing the artists’ thinking, changing process, and attention to detail. We are proud that our exhibition is entirely different from other ordinary exhibitions which show one or two works from each artist.

We are preparing for this exhibition, hoping that it will become the opportunity for you to ask yourself about the system where art museums and art critics have taken the initiative in opening an art exhibition. We are afraid our explanation may be full of sophistry or you may be against our idea, but we hope that this exhibition will lead to the chance of discussing art.
